Output filter inductor
In buck-derived converters the inductor averages the rectified pulses into DC. Size is driven by load current and by the ripple allowed into the output capacitors.
Enquire nowChoosing a toroidal inductor for SMPS duty starts with the question of where it sits. On the secondary side of a forward, push-pull or bridge converter it is the energy-storing element of the output filter. At the mains input of a supply with active power factor correction it is the boost choke. NG Electronics manufactures both types in Pune, in a standard range of 10 µH to 10 mH at up to 25 A.
An SMPS output inductor carries the DC load current with a triangular ripple on top. The inductance fixes the ripple amplitude: a higher value gives smoother current and lower capacitor stress, but a physically larger part and a slower response to load steps. Designers commonly aim for a ripple of roughly 20 to 40 per cent of full load current, then check that the core does not saturate at current limit.
Loss is the other half of the design. Copper loss follows RMS current and DCR, while core loss follows the ripple flux swing and the switching frequency, and can dominate in a small core driven hard. We are an ISO 9001:2015 certified company with our own test equipment, so inductance, DCR, Q factor, saturation current and hipot are measured on every piece, not on a sample from the lot.
ISO 9001:2015 certifiedStandard parts cover many low and medium power supplies. Where a catalogue value does not fit, a custom winding within the wider range usually does.

The same core shape serves several positions in a supply, each with its own dominant stress.

The PFC choke carries rectified mains current that follows a sine envelope, with switching ripple added. It must hold inductance at the peak of the line current at low mains.

Supplies that run continuously at high load put the emphasis on low temperature rise. Lower-loss core materials and generous copper help keep the part cool.

Small toroids smooth the output of LED drivers and act as post-filter inductors on secondary rails, where a compact closed-field part limits coupling to nearby circuits.

Raising the switching frequency reduces the inductance needed for a given ripple, which shrinks the core. It also raises core loss per unit volume for the same flux swing, so the gain is not free. Iron powder is cost-effective at lower frequencies and smaller ripple; as frequency climbs into the upper tens or hundreds of kHz, lower-loss materials such as Sendust or MPP, or a gapped ferrite shape, often become the better choice.
As a PFC choke manufacturer we deal with an extra variable: in a boost PFC stage the current, duty cycle and ripple all change continuously across each mains half-cycle. Core loss must be assessed over the whole cycle, and saturation checked at the peak current at minimum line voltage and full load. Note also that a flyback converter stores energy in its transformer, so it needs no main output inductor, only an optional small post-filter.

Power supply makers need parts that match from lot to lot, because a shift in inductance changes ripple and loop behaviour. NG Electronics winds on semi-automatic toroidal machines at its own Pune facility and checks every inductor electrically, so variation is caught before shipment. For buyers comparing an SMPS inductor supplier in India, we also make the ferrite transformers and common mode chokes that sit beside the inductor on the same board.
We are ISO 9001:2015 certified, founded in 2017 and staffed by a team of 50+. The process is short: you share the specification, we return a technical quotation within 24 working hours, a free sample follows for lab approval, and production is delivered with a test certificate on request. Batch records keep traceability to raw material and production date. Delivery covers the whole of India, and buyers overseas may enquire as well.

Answers about toroidal inductor for SMPS from NG Electronics, an ISO 9001:2015 certified company
Start from the ripple current you can accept, commonly 20 to 40 per cent of full load current, and calculate the inductance from the voltages, duty cycle and switching frequency. Then pick a core that holds that inductance at the current limit and a wire size that keeps temperature rise acceptable. Our inductance calculator helps with first estimates, and we confirm the design with a sample.
Yes. We build boost PFC chokes on toroidal powder cores, with heavier gauge or multi-strand copper where the line current calls for it. To quote, we need the input voltage range, output power, switching frequency, target ripple and conduction mode. Standard toroidal parts run up to 25 A; higher currents are handled as custom designs.
For inductors carrying DC, iron powder is the usual toroidal choice because its distributed gap resists saturation. An ungapped ferrite toroid has high permeability and saturates at a small DC current, so it suits common mode chokes and low-bias filtering, not energy storage. Where iron powder loss is too high at your frequency, alloy powder cores such as Sendust or MPP are available through our custom range.
The usual causes are core loss from a large ripple at high frequency, copper loss from undersized wire, or partial saturation at peak current, which increases ripple further. Measuring the current waveform shows which applies: ripple that curves upward sharply near the peak indicates saturation.
Not as a main energy-storage part. In a flyback converter the transformer itself stores the energy, so the output is filtered by capacitors. Many designs add a small inductor to form a second-stage LC filter that reduces switching noise on the output. That post-filter part carries the full load current but needs only a low inductance, often a few µH.
The online catalogue lists stock toroidal power inductors, and stock items typically dispatch within 24 hours. If no listed value fits, custom samples are typically supplied within 7 to 10 working days. Quantities are flexible, from about 10 pieces for R&D. RoHS and REACH compliant materials are used, and certificate copies are available on request.
