Drum Core Inductors

NG Electronics manufactures drum core inductors and drum core coils at our ISO 9001:2015 certified facility in Pune. Wound on ferrite drum cores in shielded and unshielded constructions, these are the compact, cost-effective power inductors that go straight onto a PCB — in SMD, radial and axial through-hole formats to suit whatever assembly process you run.

A drum core inductor is the practical choice when you need decent current handling in a small footprint at a sensible price. The exposed bobbin geometry makes it fast and repeatable to wind, which keeps unit cost down; adding a ferrite sleeve or resin shield around the winding contains the flux and brings EMI performance close to that of a toroid.

Our range spans low current signal chokes through to high current drum core inductors of several amps, and we supply both catalogue parts and made-to-order builds against your inductance, DCR and footprint requirements.

A drum core inductor is a coil wound on an H-shaped ferrite core with a central post and two end flanges — the shape that gives it the name. It is a compact, cost-effective power inductor widely used for PCB-mounted DC-DC conversion, filtering and energy storage, available in both shielded and unshielded constructions.

An unshielded drum core inductor has an open magnetic path, making it cheaper and thermally better but allowing stray flux to radiate. A shielded drum core inductor adds a ferrite ring or magnetic resin around the winding to close the path, dramatically cutting radiated EMI. Use shielded parts on dense boards or near sensitive circuitry, and unshielded parts where cost matters more than stray flux.

Drum core inductors are cheaper, faster to manufacture and easier to mount on a PCB, making them the practical choice for low to medium current board-level power. Toroidal inductors have a fully closed magnetic path, so they offer lower EMI and higher efficiency, and they scale better to high current. For board-level DC-DC work a drum core usually wins on cost; for high current power conversion the toroid usually wins on performance.

Yes. We build SMD drum core inductors for automated pick-and-place assembly, supplied on tape and reel where required, alongside radial and axial through-hole formats. We can match your existing footprint so no board changes are needed.
