A toroidal power inductor stores energy in a magnetic field and smooths current in power conversion circuits. It is used for output filtering in SMPS, energy storage in boost and buck converters, EMI suppression in power lines, and current smoothing in solar inverters, UPS systems and EV chargers. The closed ring core keeps the magnetic flux contained, so it interferes far less with nearby components than open-core designs.

Electrically they are the same component; the name reflects the job. When the part is storing and releasing energy in a converter it is called a toroidal inductor. When it is blocking or attenuating unwanted high frequency current it is called a toroidal choke. Our toroidal power choke range is optimised for impedance across the noise band rather than pure energy storage.
Iron powder cores handle higher DC bias with a soft saturation curve and are cost effective, making them the usual choice for a DC power inductor in solar and UPS circuits. Ferrite cores have much lower core loss at high frequency, so they suit high efficiency power inductor duty above roughly 100kHz.
