EMI filter chokes
A common mode choke for EV charger inputs suppresses noise that would otherwise travel back onto the grid. We wind single-phase and three-phase ring-core chokes with sectional or split windings.
Enquire nowA ferrite transformer for EV charger use sits inside a chain of magnetic parts, and it is easier to specify once the whole chain is clear. An AC charger mainly switches and monitors mains power for the vehicle's on-board charger, so its magnetics are modest: an auxiliary supply transformer for the control electronics and a line choke. A DC charger converts power itself and needs considerably more.
In a DC charger the mains first passes through an EMI filter built from common mode and differential mode chokes. A power factor correction stage follows, with one or more boost inductors. Next comes the isolated DC-DC converter, commonly a resonant or phase-shifted bridge, where a ferrite transformer provides galvanic separation between the grid and the battery. An output filter inductor smooths the current before it reaches the vehicle.
NG Electronics supplies parts for several of these positions. Our ferrite transformers run from under 1 VA up to several hundred watts, which covers auxiliary supplies, gate drive and isolation transformers and lower-power converter stages. Around them we make common mode chokes up to 50 A, toroidal inductors and custom wound parts on ferrite, iron powder, Sendust, High Flux, MPP and nanocrystalline cores.
ISO 9001:2015 certifiedThe ranges below come from our current product families. Insulation, temperature and qualification requirements are defined by the charger maker and built into the part per design.
| Ferrite transformers | Under 1 VA up to several hundred watts |
|---|---|
| Transformer cores | EE, EF, ETD, EER, UU, RM, PQ and toroidal ferrite |
| Common mode chokes | 250 mA to 50 A, 1 mH to 100 mH |
| CM choke cores | High-permeability MnZn ferrite and nanocrystalline |
| Toroidal power inductors | Standard up to 25 A; higher currents on custom builds |
| Custom core materials | Ferrite, iron powder, MPP, Sendust, High Flux, nanocrystalline |
| Isolation and temperature | Specified per design |
| Testing | 100% electrical testing including hipot |
| Compliance | RoHS and REACH compliant materials; certificate copies available on request |
Parts are built and tested to the customer's specification. Approval of the finished charger against its safety and EMC standards remains with the charger manufacturer.
Working from the mains inlet to the vehicle connector, these are the positions we are most often asked to fill.

A PFC choke for EV charger front ends carries line-frequency current with high-frequency ripple on top. Powder cores such as Sendust or High Flux are commonly chosen because they saturate gradually.

Ferrite transformers isolate the battery side from the mains and feed control rails and gate drivers. Insulation distances and test voltage are fixed by the charger's safety requirements.

An EV charger inductor on the DC output limits ripple current into the battery. It must hold its inductance at full load current, so the core material and gap are selected around the DC bias.

Isolation is the first question for any transformer between grid and battery. The charger's safety standard sets the test voltage, the working voltage across the barrier and the creepage and clearance distances. These decide the bobbin, the margin or insulated-wire construction and the tape build, and they consume winding window, so they need to be known before the core size is chosen and not added afterwards.
Heat is the second. Chargers often sit in sealed outdoor enclosures and run at high load for long sessions, so the magnetics reach a steady temperature instead of benefiting from short duty. Ferrite saturates at a lower flux density when hot, and copper resistance rises with temperature. Stating the real ambient inside the cabinet, and the cooling available, lets the design carry sensible margin.

Charger makers generally prefer one source for related magnetic parts, since the filter choke, the PFC inductor and the transformers are tuned together during EMC and thermal trials. As an EV charger magnetics manufacturer, NG Electronics makes all of these families in Pune, with semi-automatic toroidal and linear winding machines and a team of more than 50. Changes found during testing can be turned into revised samples quickly.

Answers about ferrite transformer for EV charger from NG Electronics, an ISO 9001:2015 certified company
In a DC charger the main ferrite transformer sits in the isolated DC-DC stage. It transfers power at the switching frequency while keeping the battery side galvanically separated from the mains. Smaller ferrite transformers in the same charger feed the control electronics, drive the power switches and provide isolated sensing. Each has different power, insulation and size requirements.
We manufacture ferrite transformers from under 1 VA up to several hundred watts, common mode chokes from 250 mA to 50 A including three-phase types, toroidal power inductors and custom wound inductors on a range of core materials. If a part falls outside these ranges, send the specification and our engineers will tell you plainly whether we can build it.
No such approvals are claimed. NG Electronics is ISO 9001:2015 certified and uses RoHS and REACH compliant materials, with certificate copies available on request. We build each part to the insulation, test voltage and construction details in your specification and test every unit. Certification of the complete charger to its applicable standards is carried out by the charger manufacturer.
PFC inductors carry a large low-frequency current with switching ripple superimposed. Powder cores such as Sendust, High Flux, MPP or iron powder have a distributed gap and lose inductance gradually as current rises, which suits this duty. Gapped ferrite gives lower core loss at high ripple but saturates abruptly. The choice depends on ripple current, frequency, size and cost targets.
Start with the rated line current, which sets the wire gauge, and the attenuation needed at the problem frequencies found in conducted emission tests. High-permeability MnZn ferrite covers most cases; nanocrystalline cores give more impedance in a smaller volume. Our ring-core chokes go up to 50 A with inductance from 1 mH to 100 mH, in single-phase and three-phase versions.
After you share the specification, we send a technical quotation within 24 working hours. Custom samples are typically ready in 7 to 10 working days, and a sample for lab approval is supplied free. Single-piece prototypes are possible, about 10 pieces is common for development builds, and production MOQ for custom parts is typically 100 to 1,000 pieces.
