Point-of-load regulators in automation
Buck stages that step a 24 V control rail down to logic voltages for sensors, controllers and I/O modules, often several to a board.
Enquire nowThe inductor is the energy store of a switching regulator, and its value sets the ripple current, the transient response and a good share of the losses. A drum core inductor for DC-DC converter use is popular because the ferrite drum gives a useful inductance in a small footprint at a moderate cost. NG Electronics manufactures these parts in Pune for buck, boost and buck-boost stages across the 1 µH to 1 mH range.
Three numbers do most of the work when you select a buck converter inductor: the inductance needed for the ripple current you have chosen, the saturation current compared with the highest peak the switch will see, and the DCR, which governs copper loss and heating. Catalogue parts force a compromise between them. A wound-to-order part lets you trade turns, wire gauge and core size against each other until all three fit.
We work as a custom drum core inductor manufacturer for engineers who have a converter on the bench and a footprint already fixed. Tell us the input and output voltages, load current, switching frequency and available height, and we propose a part in SMD, radial or axial form. Shielded and unshielded versions are both offered, since the right one depends on what else is on the board.
ISO 9001:2015 certifiedThe table shows what we build. Values that follow from your converter, such as current rating and DCR, are confirmed on the technical quotation.

Our online inductance calculator gives a starting value. The final design is checked against your peak current and ambient temperature before a sample is wound.
Drum core parts suit low and medium power regulators where board area and cost matter more than the last fraction of efficiency.

Buck and boost LED drivers run the inductor with a steady DC bias, so saturation current and temperature rise are the governing limits.

Start from ripple current. For a buck stage in continuous conduction, L = Vout × (Vin − Vout) / (Vin × fsw × ΔI), where ΔI is the peak-to-peak ripple. Designers typically choose ΔI between 20% and 40% of full load current. A larger inductance gives lower ripple but a slower response to load steps and a bigger part. In a boost stage the inductor carries the input current, which is higher than the load current.
Peak inductor current is the average current plus half the ripple, and the saturation current must sit above that with margin for start-up and overload. Ferrite saturates fairly abruptly, and its saturation level falls as the core heats up, so check the rating at operating temperature. Rated current is a separate, thermal limit: it is typically the DC current that produces a stated temperature rise, driven mainly by DCR.

A power inductor for DC-DC converter work is only as good as its consistency from lot to lot. NG Electronics is an ISO 9001:2015 certified company with winding and testing in one facility in Pune. Our LCR testers and power analysers are used on production parts as well as samples, and batch records tie each delivery to its raw material and date of manufacture.
Design help comes from people who wind the parts. Once we have your converter details, a technical quotation is issued within 24 working hours, followed by a free sample for approval in your lab. Design support carries no charge against firm production intent. Orders are dispatched from Pune to customers throughout India, and we are glad to hear from overseas design teams as well.

Answers about drum core inductor for DC-DC converter from NG Electronics, an ISO 9001:2015 certified company
Calculate the inductance from your target ripple current, input and output voltages and switching frequency. Then check that the saturation current exceeds the peak inductor current with margin, and that the DCR keeps temperature rise acceptable. Finally decide whether shielding is needed based on what sits near the inductor on the board.
Saturation current is the DC level at which inductance has dropped by a stated percentage because the core is running out of flux capacity. Rated current is a thermal figure, typically the current that causes a given temperature rise from copper loss. A converter inductor must satisfy both limits: peak current against saturation, RMS current against heating.
When the core saturates, inductance falls sharply and the current ramps much faster than intended. Ripple and peak switch current rise, efficiency drops, and the switch or the inductor can overheat. On an oscilloscope the current waveform shows an upward kink near the peak instead of a straight ramp.
Lower DCR reduces copper loss, but it needs thicker wire, which means either fewer turns or a larger core. At higher switching frequencies core loss and AC winding loss also contribute, so DCR alone does not determine efficiency. The practical aim is a DCR that meets your temperature rise limit within the allowed footprint.
Use one if the inductor is close to the feedback divider, current sense traces, analogue inputs or another inductor, or if radiated emissions are marginal. If the part has clear space around it, an unshielded drum core typically offers a higher saturation current for the same size and a lower price.
